Hello, fellow travelers!
While watching a TV special on marriage proposals,
I found myself wondering, “Proposals? Are they tasty?”
Yes, that’s me — Binako, a writer for SaruKuma!
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to
Takamori, Takamori-machi, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture,
and the wonderful shop called
“Manraku”.

While driving along, I spotted the “Manraku” sign and instinctively turned the wheel right —
there was no way I could pass this up!
And what a fantastic decision that was!
Manraku specializes in seiro-mushi — manju (buns) steamed in traditional bamboo baskets.
Just hearing the words “bamboo-steamed” makes my mouth water!

The shop is surrounded by lush greenery, creating a peaceful atmosphere.
Doesn’t it look like the perfect place to unwind?
Recommended Menu

Here’s a look at the menu:
Chicken Manju (Tori Manju)
Pork Manju (Buta Manju)
Takana (Pickled Mustard Greens) Manju
Shrimp Manju (Ebi Manju)
Sweet Red Bean Manju (An Manju)
With such a tempting variety of savory steamed buns,
they’re perfect as a snack or a light meal between sightseeing stops.
Since each one is handmade, quantities are limited!
Get there early to avoid disappointment!
On my visit, the chicken manju was already sold out.
Nooo — I really wanted to try it!

This time I went with
Shrimp Manju (Ebi Manju) — 150 yen.

Just look at this!
That unmistakable shrimp shape stamped right on top.
THE Shrimp — ebi — エビ

Pulled fresh from the steamer, it’s so soft and fluffy
that I’d happily dive into it like a pillow!

It’s generously sized, with an irresistible aroma.
The smooth, glossy surface and the pillowy soft dough are simply perfection.

Time to break it open!

Oh my, this is irresistible!
Loaded with glass noodles and plenty of vegetables — it’s surprisingly healthy!
The big, juicy chunks of shrimp inside are wonderfully plump and satisfying.

The dough is delightfully chewy, with a subtle, fragrant wheat aroma.
I could honestly eat these one after another without stopping!
Now I’m dying to try the other flavors too (*´Д`)

If you’re traveling through Aso, definitely make a stop at Manraku — you won’t regret it!
