Hello, travelers!
This is Binako, writer for SaruKuma!

Today, I’m excited to introduce you to a delightful little sweet shop located in Ezu, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City:
“Kofuku Chagashi Kiyonaga”.

Just look for the iconic red roof β€” you can’t miss it! β™ͺ

There’s parking for 3 cars right next to the shop β€” super convenient if you’re driving! β™ͺ

Now, let’s go on a little tanuki (raccoon dog) hunt~~!

Inside, the cake showcase is filled with all kinds of treats, but the unique and adorable designs really caught my eye.

First up:

Chocolate Cake β€” 280 yen

Topped with a tiny petit chou (cream puff)!

It’s a traffic jam of cuteness!

Next:

Cheese SoufflΓ© Cake β€” 300 yen

This is one of the shop’s most popular items.

Look closely β€” there’s a tiny ladybug perched on top!

The owner’s playful sense of design is just the best.
The little stars are super cute too (*´ω`*)

And here’s another favorite:

Apple Pie β€” 330 yen

You can tell just from looking at the showcase that the bake is absolutely perfect.
That golden glaze!

It HAS to be delicious lol
Honestly, I just want to grab it with my hands and eat it right away!

Furin Pudding β€” 220 yen

Made with simple ingredients only β€” eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and rum.

Sometimes simplicity is what makes things so good.
And that little petit chou on top? Also delicious.

Mont Blanc β€” 330 yen

A luxurious Mont Blanc made with chestnut and ogura (sweet azuki bean) paste.
A huge, glossy chestnut sits proudly on top ( *Β΄θ‰Έο½€)

Brandy Cake

Without box β€” 1,260 yen

Boxed β€” 1,350 yen

Pound Cake β€” 1,100 yen

Available in Nuts, Rum Raisin, and Plain

Larger cakes perfect for sharing with family or friends! β™ͺ
The slightly grown-up Brandy Cake also looks tempting ( *Β΄θ‰Έο½€)

Whole Apple Cake β€” 1,200 yen

Chestnut Dorayaki / Plum Dorayaki β€” 180 yen

(Dorayaki is a classic Japanese sweet β€” two small pancakes sandwiching sweet filling.)

These ones really got my attention too! β™ͺ

I wonder what plum dorayaki tastes like??

And finally β€” I found it:

Pompoko Tanuki β€” 300 yen

(Tanuki is a beloved Japanese raccoon dog, often featured in folklore and traditional art.)

You can even choose its facial expression! Just ordering felt like a fun adventure.
It totally brings out your inner child β™ͺ

Inside the shop, there’s a cute wooden rocking horse and a small table β€” a charming touch that adds to the cozy atmosphere β™ͺ

Across from the table, there were sample illustrations of custom character cakes ( *Β΄θ‰Έο½€)

Word travels fast β€” the shop receives lots of orders for these special cakes! ( *Β΄θ‰Έο½€)
Kids love them, and honestly, adults do too β™ͺ

Recommended Menu Item

I brought one home with me!

Winking Pompoko Tanuki β€” 300 yen

That winking face is just instant therapy.

First, set the tanuki free to roam!

Where to start eating? Such a tough decision…

I’ll start from the edge!

Pompoko Tanuki is SO good lol

The moist sponge, the slightly bitter crunchy chocolate, and the dreamy cream inside…

Could that be a nut cream?

It’s sweet and pairs beautifully with the chocolate.
The crunchy nut texture is the perfect accent.

And now… just the face is left.

How should I tackle this part… so hard to decide…

I’ll keep that wink intact until the very end!!!

As expected β€” the center is the best part!
It was packed with the most cream, and absolutely delicious right down to the last bite!!

Honestly… I felt a little sad to see it gone.

If you’re visiting Kumamoto, please come hunt down your own tanuki at this charming sweet shop!
The Apple Pie and Cheese Cake are also highly recommended β™ͺ
