Sando-ya: Over 20 Years of Handmade Sandwich Love in Watarogu, Kumamoto
2020.09.30

A Sarukuma writer’s hands-on visit to “Sando-ya” in central Kumamoto City. We’ve packed in family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.
Hello, fellow travelers!
[Sarukuma] writer Cho-san here!
Today we’re heading to
Watarogu in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, to introduce
“Sando-ya” — a beloved local sandwich shop.
Located right along Sangyo Road, this is a shop many locals will instantly recognize as they drive by.
A specialty shop dedicated to handmade sandwiches, Sando-ya first opened its doors back in 1996 and has been delighting customers for over 20 years.
The owners are seriously particular about their bread varieties and ingredients, rotating selections on a daily and weekly basis.
While they have a regular menu of staples, they also offer
“Plate Menus” as a special option.
Perfect for office meetings, birthday parties, school sports days — you name it!
It’s a versatile choice for so many occasions ♪
Large platter plate menus start from ¥2,000,
and boxed menu options start from ¥1,000.
Both require reservations at least one day in advance ☆
Recommended Menu Items
On the day we visited, our timing was a bit off and some items had already sold out…
But here’s the lineup we did see ♪
(The showcase had a bit of condensation,
so the photos are a touch blurry…)
Pirate’s Dessert Sandwich ¥280
Strawberry Sandwich ¥280
Tuna & Egg ¥270
Tuna & Tomato ¥291
Cheese & Egg ¥270
Ham & Egg ¥291
Pumpkin Croquette ¥280
Nikujaga (Meat & Potato) Croquette ¥280
Chicken Cutlet ¥313
Shrimp Gratin ¥280
Pork Fillet Cutlet (Hire-katsu) ¥356
Pork Loin Cutlet (Rosu-katsu) ¥356
This time, we picked up these three ♪
Ham & Egg ¥291
Shrimp Gratin ¥280
Pirate’s Dessert Sandwich ¥280
They might not look flashy at first glance,
but you can absolutely taste why this place has been treasured for over 20 years ☆
The “Pirate” Dessert Sandwich
is loaded with kiwi, pineapple, and peach.
It’s apparently one of the shop’s most popular items!
Having different bread varieties each day is a really fun touch ♪
Not just the fillings — the bread itself rotates,
so you’ll never get bored coming back!
If you place an advance order for three or more sandwiches,
you can even get custom-made sandwiches built to your taste.
With over 20 ingredients to choose from,
the customization options are fantastic!
Sando-ya is a takeout-only shop,
which makes it especially convenient in times like these — definitely worth a stop ♪
