Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to
Hanabata-cho, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City, where you’ll find
[Chinese Diner Tougen].

This is a special spot recommended by a friend who was born and raised in the heart of the city —
a true local’s favorite!

It’s the quintessential “machi-chuka” (neighborhood Chinese diner) tucked right in the city center.
You’ll find it along Ginnan-dori (Ginkgo Street).

While they used to offer lunch service,
at the time of my visit (August 2020),
they were operating only in the evenings: 6:00 PM to 1:30 AM.
Despite the late hours, customers were streaming in non-stop!

Inside, the diner has 6 counter seats,
and 10 table seats.

It’s not a huge restaurant by any means, but
the atmosphere is incredibly cozy,
and most of the customers seem to be regulars —
so expectations were running high!

I also noticed plenty of solo diners
stopping by for a casual meal.

Recommended Menu

The menu is easy to read and very reasonably priced!
(The item that’s hard to see due to the glare is
Champon ¥780)
The back of the menu has more options.
For beer lovers, the draft beer set shown in the bottom left is a fantastic deal!

Shina-ten ¥750, small ¥400 — pork cutlet coated in panko breadcrumbs.)

This time, I let my friend pick her recommended dishes!
Let me introduce them in the order they arrived!

First up: Yakisoba ¥680
But wait — this isn’t your typical “yakisoba”!
It’s actually more like crispy noodles topped with thick sauce (sara-udon style)!

The presentation is wonderfully simple, but
oh my goodness, it was incredibly delicious!!
The ankake (thick savory sauce) looks plain at first glance,

but one bite reveals layers of complex umami flavor.
It’s never overpowering,
so your chopsticks just keep moving!

Still reeling from the deliciousness of the first dish,
the next plate arrived.

The second dish… Ta-da!
Gyoza (8 pieces) ¥440.
Look at that perfect golden sear!
Personally, I’m a huge gyoza fan —
they’ve consistently ranked in my Top 3 favorite dishes
(for the past 15 years or so)
as a permanent fixture.
My gyoza love runs deep,
(I know, you didn’t ask! Haha)
but these are so good I want to tell every fellow gyoza lover I know!!

The menu describes them as “the restaurant’s signature pride” — and I completely agree!
More dishes kept coming!

Third dish: Sara-udon ¥680
Now, this style is what most people would call “yakisoba”,
but at Tougen, it’s served as sara-udon!

And it was absolutely incredible!
No wonder it’s the restaurant’s #1 most popular dish ☆☆☆
At first glance, the ingredients look like things you’d find in any home kitchen,
but the flavor is unmistakably restaurant-quality —
the kind of magical taste you simply can’t replicate at home.

And we’re not done yet! Haha

The fourth dish:
Gomoku Chahan (Five-Ingredient Fried Rice, with soup) ¥680
Another fan favorite!

Now, here’s the unfortunate news…
I was so absorbed in eating that I forgot to take a photo!

Oh my goodness…

Moving on to the fifth dish,
my friend added another recommended side dish!
Liang Ban Hai Zhe (Cold Jellyfish Salad) ¥800
(Honestly, I can never remember the exact name! Haha)
It’s a refreshing dish of jellyfish and cucumber.
The tangy flavor is perfectly balanced — light, refreshing, and absolutely delicious!
The crunchy texture of the jellyfish is genuinely addictive ♡

As mentioned earlier, this is one of the dishes you can choose for the beer set on the back of the menu —
and I can totally see why!
It pairs beautifully with a cold beer,
a fantastic appetizer-style dish!

A spread of mouthwatering food like this —
surely this is what they call
a “feast for the eyes”!

The fried rice is also wonderfully simple yet incredibly delicious —
another dish you simply can’t recreate at home.)

I don’t mean any disrespect, but
this isn’t the kind of flashy, showy Chinese restaurant you might expect —
yet every single dish was delicious, and I left feeling completely satisfied!

The name “Chinese Diner” truly suits this place — it fits perfectly.
It’s unpretentious yet seriously skilled.

According to my city-born friend,
she’s been coming to Tougen for Chinese food since she was a child,
so much so that her family rarely cooks Chinese food at home —
that’s the level of complete trust she places in this neighborhood Chinese diner.

Flashier Chinese restaurants are the kind you visit occasionally and think “this is so good!” —
but Tougen is the kind of place you’d happily eat at every single day…
