Introducing Hormon-ya

Hello, travel lovers! This is Gussan, writer for [Sarukuma].

Today we’re heading to Kamebamachi Kamekawa, Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture
to visit 《Hormon-ya》.
This Japanese black wagyu beef specialty restaurant opened in December 2021.
When it comes to yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) in Amakusa, 《Tanaka Chikusan》 is the famous name everyone knows. Hormon-ya actually sources its premium wagyu beef directly from Tanaka Chikusan.

Rare and high-end cuts like wagyu beef tongue and top-grade hanging tender (harami) — items that can only be found at 《Tanaka Chikusan Honten》 and 《Hormon-ya》 — are served here at incredibly reasonable prices. Expectations are running high!

Let’s head inside!
The friendly owner — who happens to look just like a famous character — greets you warmly as you walk in.Parking spaces 3 through 7 in front of the restaurant are reserved for customers — please park starting from the back.
Inside you’ll find counter seats perfect for serious wagyu enthusiasts,
as well as comfortable sofa-style table seating that’s ideal for families with children.
The modern, clean interior has excellent ventilation, so you don’t have to worry about smoke smell sticking to your clothes. Now let’s check out the wagyu yakiniku menu!
For groups of two or more, the Omakase Mori (chef’s selection platter, 3,850–11,000 yen) is highly recommended. You can even request your favorite cuts.
Sides include rice (from 220 yen), miso soup (150 yen), kimchi (350 yen), and seasonal motsunabe (offal hot pot).
I’d love to try the motsunabe too!
There are also à la carte items (from 600 yen), set meals (from 800 yen), and niku udon (beef udon, 660 yen).
Even the lunch menu features the same premium wagyu beef! Just looking at the prices — isn’t this incredibly affordable?

Hormon-ya Recommended Menu

And here it is!
We ordered the Omakase Mori C Set!
A magnificent wagyu beef spectacular! Each slice is so thick — feast your eyes!
The portions are so generous, you’d pay much more for the same in central Kumamoto City.
It almost feels too beautiful to eat (lol).
A truly captivating sight that draws every eye in the room.
The TONGUE!! Absolutely incredible!!
I’ve never seen such an elegant cut of beef tongue in my life ♡
The hormon (offal) has a satisfying chew yet melts in your mouth.
A non-stop parade of rich, flavorful beef — it’s just too delicious!
I want to whisper this quietly: (I don’t want to tell anyone about this place!)
You can switch up flavors with the original house sauce or salt, but honestly, the natural beef flavor is so good that I’d recommend keeping seasonings light.
The niku udon is also a great option for families with kids — the broth is made from 100% pure beef stock, with no other ingredients.
Gently rich with the natural sweetness and umami of the beef, this udon is one of Hormon-ya’s most popular dishes.

《Hormon-ya》 serves top-grade wagyu beef at remarkably reasonable prices.
Located just past the Hondo Loop Bridge, it’s surprisingly close even from central Kumamoto City!
Definitely add it to your Amakusa itinerary ♪
