About Marumekko
Hello there! It’s Maru, your SaruKuma writer πΌ
Today I’m introducing a charming little shop located in Tatsuda, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City,
“Marumekko”.
This is a takeout-only handmade piroshki specialty shop tucked inside a quiet residential neighborhood.

The owners previously sold their piroshki through door-to-door visits, but in January of this year, they finally opened a small shop right next to their home.
The location can be a little tricky to find, so let me walk you through it!

Coming from the city side, turn right at the Chorenji intersection on the North Bypass and head up the slope.

After driving up the hill for a bit, you’ll spot “Tatsuda no Mori Nursery School” on your right.

Right next to the nursery on the left, look for the cheerful yellow piroshki flag waving in the breeze!
Follow the arrow, turn left, and head a little further up the slope. The shop will appear right in front of you. The road is narrow, so please drive carefully π

Here it is! The shop sits right beside the owners’ home. You can park in the space in front of the store.
A kind-hearted couple greeted us with warm smiles.
Here’s the menu.
Savory piroshki are 260 yen each, and dessert piroshki are 200 yen (the sweet potato with chestnut is 260 yen).

Isn’t the chubby little bunny logo, shaped just like a piroshki, absolutely adorable? β₯
Marumekko’s Recommended Menu

This time, I picked up four different flavors to try.

Their plump, rounded shapes are just irresistibly cute! Each flavor has a slightly different shape so you can tell them apart at a glance.
Now, let’s take a peek inside (^^)

First up, the must-try classic: the Russian-style piroshki for 260 yen. It was my first time having a piroshki stuffed with boiled egg, and it’s loaded with plenty of seasoned ground meat too.
The slightly sweet dough and gentle, homemade flavor will keep you smiling between bites π

Next is the Curry piroshki for 260 yen. A guaranteed crowd-pleaser. It isn’t very spicy, so even kids should enjoy it without any trouble.

And here’s the Tonkatsu piroshki for 260 yen.
I was amazed when I cut it open: there’s a whole fried cutlet tucked inside the bread! π A cheese-filled pork loin cutlet paired with shredded cabbage, just like a real tonkatsu sandwich. It’s filling and seriously satisfying.

And here’s the dessert pick: the Sweet Potato Piroshki with Chestnut for 260 yen.
A whole chestnut nestled in creamy sweet potato filling pairs beautifully with the fried bread π₯°
Every single one feels lovingly handmade and brimming with care. Definitely give them a try when you visit Kumamoto! β¨
