Introducing Kamameshi Shōmei
Hello travelers! I’m Asukarando, a writer for [Sarukuma].
Today I’m excited to introduce a wonderful little restaurant in Yamaga City, Yamaga district:
[Kamameshi Shōmei] — a traditional Japanese kettle-rice (kamameshi) specialist.
When you think of Yamaga, the famous Yamaga Toro lanterns, Yamaga yokan sweets, and of course the iconic Yachiyoza Theater come to mind!
Kamameshi Shōmei sits right next door to that very Yachiyoza Theater, and I had to check it out (*^.^*)
The streets around Yachiyoza are charmingly atmospheric — perfect for a leisurely stroll back through old Japan.
There are even cozy spots like this where you can rest along the way (^-^)
Kamameshi Shōmei is literally right next to the Yachiyoza Theater building — you can’t miss it!
Here’s the entrance to Kamameshi Shōmei. The understated, beautifully colored noren (traditional curtain) sets a serene tone (*^.^*)
Just a heads-up for international visitors — you’ll need to take off your shoes before entering, as it’s a traditional tatami-mat room.
The interior of Kamameshi Shōmei is intimate and cozy — and that’s exactly what makes it feel so relaxing (^-^)v
The dining area features all table seating, so it’s comfortable even if you’re not used to sitting on the floor.
Here’s the menu at Kamameshi Shōmei!
Horse Ginger Kamameshi — 1,000 yen
Gomoku (Five-Ingredient) Kamameshi — 1,000 yen
Seafood Kamameshi — 1,200 yen
Eel (Unagi) Kamameshi — 1,200 yen
(All sets include a small side dish, soup, and Japanese pickles)
That’s right — the menu focuses entirely on kamameshi, the traditional Japanese rice cooked in an individual iron kettle!
Each kettle is cooked fresh after you order, so it takes about 20 minutes, but the reward is piping-hot, freshly steamed rice with that signature crispy bottom layer (^3^)/
Recommended Menu at Kamameshi Shōmei
We tried both the Gomoku Kamameshi and the Seafood Kamameshi.
While you wait for the kamameshi, the side dishes and soup arrive first.
By then, the irresistible aroma of rice cooking is already filling the room — it’s pure anticipation!
The iron kettle, just like the famous one from a popular Japanese anime, arrived steaming hot. Reach for it carefully — the kettle gets very hot, so please be cautious to avoid burns!
First, lifting the lid on the Gomoku Kamameshi!
If you’re dining with kids, the Gomoku Kamameshi is the easiest to enjoy and a great recommendation for families (*^.^*)
Next, the Seafood Kamameshi reveal! Loaded with shrimp, scallops, and even salmon roe (ikura) — a truly luxurious version (^-^)v
Scooping it into the rice bowl, the excitement just kept building (>.<)y-~
The savory seafood flavor infused into every single grain of rice — the umami was incredible! Pure midday happiness!
The small side dishes feature seasonal ingredients, each one carefully prepared with delicate, refined flavors.
The soup of the day was gojiru — a traditional ground-soybean soup with a delightful textured mouthfeel that paired beautifully with the kamameshi (^3^)/
Tucked away in this historic, atmospheric old town, Kamameshi Shōmei is a perfect lunch stop while exploring Yamaga (*^.^*) Highly recommended for travelers who want an authentic Japanese dining experience!
