About Nakamuta Lock Gate Play Park

Hello travelers, I’m Aikero, a writer for SaruKuma.

Today I’m introducing a hidden gem in Nakamuta, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City:
Nakamuta Lock Gate Play Park (中無田閘門プレイパーク).Turn off Route 3 onto the Kawashiri city road, and you’ll spot a sign on the bridge crossing the Kase River.
This photo shows the sign as viewed from the Uto direction, but it’s also visible from the Kawashiri Station side, so it’s easy to find from either approach.
At the fork in the road, there’s a large sign — just follow the directions and you’ll be fine. From here, it’s a single road running along the river, and there’s very little traffic — perfect for a peaceful drive.
On your way to the park, you’ll see the historic Kawashiri Boat Landing on the opposite bank.
This spot is steeped in history and absolutely worth a visit too (^^)And just like that, we arrived at the parking lot!
It’s nice and spacious, so parking is a breeze.Since this is right by the river, please keep a close eye on younger travelers at all times.
A heads-up: dogs and cats are not allowed to be walked inside the Play Park.Restrooms are located inside the office building.
There’s usually a staff member on duty there.
Inside the Kase River Aquarium, we spotted goldfish swimming around (and possibly only goldfish?).
There was also an exhibit on invasive floating water plants.
I’d only ever heard of one species, so seeing this many varieties was a real surprise.Right next to the lock gate, there’s a practice area for traditional cast-net fishing — we even saw kids practicing their throws while we were visiting.
On the day of our visit, the staff were busy making bamboo charcoal.
They produce the charcoal here and place it in the irrigation channels to help purify the water — a wonderful eco-friendly tradition.

By the way, do you know what a lock gate (kōmon) actually is?
Let me give you a quick rundown about the Nakamuta Lock Gate (^^)/

Back when this gate was built, cars were rare, and boats traveling the rivers played the role that delivery trucks play today.
Boat traffic to Kawashiri had to pass through the Midori River, but because the Kase River and Midori River sit at different water levels,
the Nakamuta Lock Gate was constructed to adjust water levels inside the chamber and allow boats to travel smoothly between the two.

In fact, this is said to be the only wooden lock gate in all of Japan that connects two different rivers!

That’s why locals affectionately call it \”Kumamoto’s Mini Panama Canal\”!
Right next to the gate, there’s an illustrated explanation panel — be sure to give it a read when you visit (^^)/
I honestly had no idea what a lock gate was until I came here myself (^_^;)

Why We Love Nakamuta Lock Gate Play Park

I assumed this was just a place to view a historic lock gate, but it turns out they hold special events here twice a year.
On May 5th and August 11th (Mountain Day, a Japanese national holiday), they offer family-friendly activities like canoeing and fishing!
\”We usually get around 100 visitors,\” the staff member happily told me (^.^)And there are two friendly goats who live here!
They don’t have official names, so my daughter took it upon herself to call them \”Yacchan\” and \”Memechan\” (lol)
There’s goat food available nearby for visitors to feed them.
My daughter was a bit shy at first, but the goats’ adorable munching won her over and she ended up feeding them lots.
I never expected to find an animal-interaction experience here — kids are sure to love it ♪
But wait, there’s even more! You can camp here too!!
And the best part? It’s completely free (●^o^●)

Just make sure to contact the office 1 to 2 weeks in advance to reserve your spot.
Also, open ground fires are not permitted.
Always use a fire blanket or fire pit stand for your campfire. The campsite also has a washing area for convenience.
Camping right by the river — doesn’t that sound absolutely wonderful!?
I’m planning to come back for a camping trip myself once the weather warms up (●^o^●)

Nakamuta Lock Gate Play Park is the perfect spot to feel close to the river and Kumamoto’s beautiful nature.
