Introducing Imo no Koto de Atama ga Ippai
Hello everyone! It’s Mofumofu 🐈, your SaruKuma travel writer.
Today I’m excited to introduce a wonderful little spot located in Tomiai-machi Sugishima, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City:
【Imo no Koto de Atama ga Ippai】 (which translates to “My Head is Full of Sweet Potatoes”) 🍠
This charming tsubo-yaki (pot-roasted) sweet potato shop opened in mid-June 2022!

I’d been curious about this shop every time I drove past it!
Fun fact: the cheerful character on the signboard is actually the owner himself ☆ And honestly… the resemblance is uncanny 😲😲!

There’s parking available in front of and beside the shop, with space for about 6–7 cars 🚗

The owner roasts each sweet potato with love and care for about two hours.
He carefully checks them, rotates them, and repeats this process to create perfectly caramelized, honey-sweet potatoes 🍠
You could even see the rich syrup pooling underneath the traditional roasting pot! (My mouth was watering 🤤)

The shop uses two premium Japanese sweet potato varieties: Beni Haruka and Silk Sweet.
That gorgeous roasted aroma in the air? Absolutely irresistible!

【Tsubo-Yaki Imo (Hot or Cold Pot-Roasted Sweet Potato)】 ¥1.5/g (tax included)
Slowly roasted to perfection in a special clay pot — these are an absolute treat!
Melt-in-your-mouth sweet and sticky 💕 On my visit, they were serving Beni Haruka!
It’s also a wonderful natural option for baby food or kids’ snacks ☆

【Hiyashi Imo (Chilled Sweet Potato)】 1 pack ¥400 (tax included)
Each pack is filled with carefully selected, premium pieces of sweet potato!
It’s like a paradise of all the best bits ☆
The flavor is refreshingly sweet — you could honestly eat one piece after another 💕

【Tsubo-Yaki Imo Brûlée】 1 pack ¥400 (tax included)
Loaded with rich custard ♪
A luxurious treat with a smooth, melt-in-your-mouth brûlée finish!

【Shaved Ice】 ¥300 (tax included)
Choose from 11 different flavors! 🍨 So hard to pick a favorite ♪
Add condensed milk for +¥50 or ice cream for +¥100 ☆

【Tsubo-Yaki Imo Smoothie】 ¥300–¥400 (tax included)
The price difference depends on whether it has whipped cream or whether the kuromitsu (black sugar syrup) is on the inside or outside!
And there’s even more on the menu…
【Tsubo-Yaki Imo on Ice Cream】 ¥400 (tax included)
The combination of warm pot-roasted sweet potato and cold vanilla ice cream is absolute heaven!
【Soft Drinks: Cola / Ramune】 ¥100–¥150 (tax included)
And many more delicious options ✨

There’s even a fun lottery game for kids and a cool motorcycle on display 🏍✨
Hopping on for a photo? Guaranteed to be Instagram-worthy!
Imo no Koto de Atama ga Ippai: Recommended Menu
I tried a piping-hot sweet potato fresh out of the pot ☆ (I should’ve peeled the skin back a bit before snapping the photo…)
Honestly… you don’t even need teeth to eat this! (lol)
I’d always pictured roasted sweet potatoes as fluffy and starchy, but this one practically melted in my mouth — what a revelation!
I devoured one half whole, then peeled the skin off the other half and savored the silky-smooth flesh on its own 🤤

On the way home, I sipped on the Tsubo-Yaki Imo Smoothie, then dug into the Tsubo-Yaki Imo Brûlée!
(They include a wooden spoon so you can dive in right away ☆)

Ohhh… pure happiness 💕 This brûlée!!!
The natural sweetness of the sweet potato, the rich custard, the slight bitterness of the caramelized top — it’s all just SO good!
The combination is heavenly and filled my mouth with joy 🥰
And here’s a bonus! Right next door to the sweet potato shop, they sell beautiful handmade goods ✨

The owner’s wife crafts adorable masks, card holders, and more with such care…
(As a cat lover, Mofumofu 🐈 had her eye on the blue card holder 👀💕)

Bags crafted from kimono, yukata, and scarf fabrics 👜✨
Uniquely stylish and a perfect souvenir of Japan!

The owner himself crafts these mask chains ✨ Such talented hands! Truly impressive!
Even when the chain pattern is the same, every charm at the end is one-of-a-kind 😲

I couldn’t resist the floral one — so cute! 🌼
With mask-wearing still a part of life and my mask always going missing, I really wanted one!
So many lovely designs — I might need to grab a few more as backups…
【Imo no Koto de Atama ga Ippai】 will warm your heart in every way:
the heavenly sweet potatoes, and the genuine kindness of the owner and his wife make this place truly special ✨
