Introducing GOKAKUYA

Hello travelers! It’s Sunny ๐Ÿฉ, your Sarukuma writer.

Today, I’m thrilled to introduce GOKAKUYA, a charming seafood spot tucked away in Minami-Kumamoto, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. The name “Gokaku” means “to pass” in Japanese โ€” as in passing an exam โ€” and trust me, this place passes every test of a great meal!

Just a 30-second walk from Minami-Kumamoto Station!

You’ll spot it the moment you step out of the ticket gate!

The stylish, inviting storefront on the ground floor of the building is hard to miss โฃ๏ธ

โ€ปHeads up: there’s no parking lot, so we recommend taking the train or using a nearby pay parking lot!

Inside, it’s a cozy little space with two tables
and a handful of counter seats โ˜บ๏ธ
The walls are lined with autographs from celebrity guests โ™ช

It’s a wildly popular spot ๐Ÿ˜

The menu is so packed with options, you might have a happy dilemma choosing! โœจ

GOKAKUYA’s Recommended Menu

Out of the many tantalizing choices on the menu…

I went with the Gokaku Seafood Bowl (Kaisendon) โ€” 1,000 yen ๐Ÿ™

“Wow โ€” this looks absolutely incredible! ๐Ÿ˜”

The menu says it has 10 different toppings, but it honestly looks like even more!

Instead of regular soy sauce, you drizzle it with the restaurant’s signature special sauce.

And surprise โ€” you can even eat the shrimp heads! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Now, time to dig in ๐Ÿ™

So much fresh seafood piled on top, you won’t even know where to start!
Pure happiness in a bowl ~ ๐Ÿ˜š

The seafood is fantastic, of course โ€” but the tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet) was exactly my style of flavor and absolutely delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹
I munched right through the deep-fried shrimp heads too! Packed with rich, savory shrimp miso โ€” incredible! โ—

The miso soup is loaded with fish parts, with plenty of meat still on the bone โ€” what a treat โ™ช

The broth has incredible depth โ˜บ๏ธ
I even sucked every last bit off the bones and eyes ๐Ÿ˜‚

In short โ€”
a perfect score, A+! ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Fun fact: GOKAKUYA โ€” whose name literally means “Pass-the-Test Shop” โ€” is actually a popular pilgrimage spot for students preparing for entrance exams and anyone hoping to “pass” something important in life ๐Ÿ˜Š

They even sell ema (wooden prayer plaques) that have been blessed at a local shrine!
When my own child reaches exam age, I’m definitely bringing them here for a good-luck meal ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

But before that, I’ll absolutely be back just for the food!

Don’t miss GOKAKUYA on your next trip to Kumamoto โ€” you’ll thank yourself later! โ€ผ๏ธโ˜บ๏ธ
