Introducing Ramen Misoya

Hello there!
This is Gussan, your Sarukuma writer.

Brrrrr β€” it’s freezing! I can barely drag myself out of bed in the morning, and my shoulders are tense from the cold.
On chilly days like this, nothing hits the spot quite like a steaming bowl of udon or ramen.

Kumamoto is famous for tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen, but personally, I’m more of a shio (salt) or miso ramen fan.
So today, I set out to explore a new spot I’d been curious about for a while.

Let me introduce you to Ramen Misoya, located in Obiyama, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City.

Even though I arrived after the lunch rush, the restaurant was completely full and I had to wait β€” clear proof of just how popular this place is.
There’s parking both in front of and behind the restaurant.
Inside, seating is counter-only, so if you’re bringing kids, it’s probably best suited for older children (kindergarten age and up).
That said, watching the chefs at work right in front of you can be a real treat for little ones!
The counter is stocked with chili oil (rayu), Japanese chili powder (ichimi), and other condiments to customize your bowl.
And of course, tissues β€” an absolute must-have at any ramen joint.
There’s also free karashi takana (spicy pickled mustard greens) on the counter, available to enjoy as much as you like.
Its addictive heat had me nibbling away while I waited for my ramen to arrive!

Ramen Misoya’s Recommended Menu

Ramen Misoya keeps the menu simple and easy to navigate.
During lunchtime, you can also get a small bowl of rice on the house β€” a nice bonus!
Here it comes β€” the Miso Ramen, 720 yen.
It’s topped with stir-fried bean sprouts, carrots, green onions, and a slice of chashu (braised pork).
And here’s what my husband ordered β€” the Double Bean Sprout Ramen, 770 yen, in a large size (large is +100 yen).
The broth looks rich, but it’s surprisingly light β€” yet deeply flavorful enough to keep your appetite firing all the way to the last sip.
The noodles are medium-thick and curly, perfectly catching the soup with every bite. So satisfying!
These are exactly my type of noodles β€” I’ll always pick medium-thick over thin.
I’m usually not a fan of overly fatty chashu, but the chashu at Ramen Misoya is wonderfully meaty without being greasy at all.

With its gently spicy broth that warms you from the inside out, Ramen Misoya is the perfect spot for a chilly day. Be sure to give it a try!
