Introducing cafe + antiques KOKOPELLI

Hello, fellow travelers!
It’s Igaguri 🌰, your Sarukuma writer, here with another Kumamoto discovery.

Today I’m taking you to a true hidden gem tucked away in Matsuo-machi, Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City:
“cafe + antiques KOKOPELLI”.

If you’ve never heard of Matsuo-machi, you’re not alone β€” even locals sometimes need a map for this one!

Look for the Iwato no Sato Park parking lot β€” that’s your landmark.
(The cafe staff recommended parking here, so take their word for it!)

You’ll spot the iconic Miyamoto Musashi statue here too. The cafe sits near several famous spots:
Gohyaku Rakan (500 Buddhist statues)
Kuroiwa Observation Deck
Reigando Cave at Gonzenji Temple β€” where the legendary swordsman Musashi wrote “The Book of Five Rings.”

Follow the signpost and head down the slope.

The autumn foliage along the path was absolutely breathtaking β€” a feast for the eyes! β™‘

After a 5–10 minute walk down the gentle slope, you’ll arrive at the cafe.
There’s a smaller lot near the entrance with about 5 spaces.

Parking here can be a bit tight, but if you’re traveling with small children, this closer lot is your best bet.

There’s no flashy signboard, so first-time visitors might wonder, “Wait, is this really it?” (haha)

The peaceful, rural atmosphere is incredibly soothing.

(Looking back β€” the parking lot is on the left.)

Wow β€” the terrace seating looks absolutely delightful!

As is Japanese custom, slip off your shoes at the entrance and place them in the shoe cubby before stepping inside!

They even provide complimentary masks!

Even the tables and chairs are antique pieces β€” a real treat for vintage lovers!

There’s also traditional tatami-mat seating (zashiki).

Up on the second floor (loft) you’ll find a kids’ room.

And yes, there’s a diaper-changing station too β€” very family-friendly!

Must-Try Menu Items at cafe + antiques KOKOPELLI

The cafe offers three one-plate lunch options:
Braised pork (Buta no Kakuni)
Risotto
Vegetable Curry

They also accommodate dietary needs and allergies upon request.

I went with the Braised Pork plate (1,100 yen)!

Beautifully spiced with star anise β€” a deep, authentic Asian flavor!
It’s served with mixed-grain rice for a wholesome touch.

Plus a fresh garden salad and quinoa marinade.

Quinoa β€” that famously nutritious superfood β€” at a quiet countryside cafe?! Yes, please!
I didn’t leave a single grain behind.

My friend chose the risotto.

It looked absolutely mouthwatering!

If the mains are this good, the desserts must be amazing too β€” so we tried them!

A pear tart and…

…a mixed-nut tart, both incredibly delicious!

I was seriously tempted to grab some to go…
(Dine-in: 440 yen each / Takeout: 432 yen each)

I even thought about taking home one of the adorable “Konkonbe” forest fairy figurines on display!

If you love antiques or traditional Japanese kominka (old folk house) cafes, this is an absolute must-visit while you’re in Kumamoto!
