Discover Bake House Haruru

Hello travelers!
I’m Binako, a writer for Sarukuma, and today I’m out and about exploring Kumamoto.

This time I’m introducing a charming little bakery called “Bake House Haruru”, tucked away in Asashi-Shinmei, Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

I drive through Asashi often, but I had no idea there was a bakery here!
The wood-and-red exterior is absolutely adorable.

You can park right next to the shop.
Heads up: the lot is gravel, so be careful if you’re pushing a stroller.

Step inside and you’ll find a cute display case lined with neatly wrapped breads.

The owner modestly told me, “They’re not very photogenic…” but honestly? They’re seriously cute!

Just look at this Melon Pan (145 yen) — doesn’t it look like a little turtle?
Next to it, the Strawberry Melon Pan (162 yen) has the sweetest hint of pink.

If these aren’t Instagram-worthy, then I don’t know what is!

It’s a little hard to see, but the Anpan (151 yen) is shaped like everyone’s favorite Japanese superhero, Anpanman — the beloved sweet-bean-paste-faced cartoon character that every Japanese kid grows up with.

His eyes, nose, and mouth are perfectly recreated. One bite hits you right in the heart!

The Mocchiri (Chewy) Croissants are the shop’s signature item.

They come in a variety of flavors, so you’re bound to find a favorite.
(*Please reserve in advance if ordering 5 or more.)

On top of the display case, you’ll find discounted bread.
Pop them in the toaster and they taste freshly baked again.
Easy on the wallet — you’ll want to buy them all!

They also offer egg-free and dairy-free dinner rolls.
A wonderful option for visitors with allergies, and they’re versatile enough for all kinds of creative pairings.

Walk further inside and you’ll find a few counter seats for eating in.

Beside the register, there’s a selection of drinks and sandwiches.

From café latte to cider, the wide drink selection is super convenient.

They also sell handmade jams made with safe, body-friendly ingredients.
Perfect for breakfast or afternoon tea time.

That warmth shines through in every bread they bake.

Bake House Haruru’s Must-Try Menu

This time, we tried:
・Croissants (Black Sesame & Chocolate)
・Anpan (sweet bean paste bread)
・Choco Cornet

The black sesame croissant was a first for me.

The crunchy black sesame paste filled the air with toasty aroma, and the croissant itself was unbelievably flaky.

Honestly, the crispiest, flakiest croissant I’ve ever had — so good it’ll knock your socks off.
You absolutely have to try one!

My son, who loves anything with great texture, devoured his croissant in a flash.

I’d love to come back and try the plain version next time…

The choco cornet and anpan were for my son.

His face lit up the moment he saw his favorite character bread.
He nibbled on the eyebrows, then the cheeks,
shouting “Yummy!” the whole time — pure happiness.

Every loaf and pastry here is made with love and care.
If you’re exploring Kikuchi City, definitely stop by!

And don’t miss those croissants — they’re truly something special!
