Welcome to Sata Nori-ten

Hello there!
It’s Maru, your Sarukuma travel writer ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™ƒ

Today I’m taking you to Sumiyoshi in Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, to visit a hidden gem called “Sata Nori-ten” โ€” a specialty nori (Japanese seaweed) shop you don’t want to miss.

You’ll find the shop right along Route 57, on the way to the Amakusa area. The big nori signboard is a familiar landmark for many locals!

There’s a parking lot right in front of the shop, and judging by the steady flow of customers, it’s clearly a local favorite (^O^)

When you think of the Ariake Sea, you think of nori! ๐ŸŒŠ

The Ariake Sea is famous for its dramatic 6-meter tidal range, and that unique environment produces some of the highest-quality nori in Japan. The shop carefully crafts every product using this premium local seaweed.

Stepping inside, the shop feels like a nori expo! The shelves are packed with an amazing variety of products ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

You can choose from different sizes, quantities, flavored varieties, and packaging โ€” there’s truly something for everyone!

The most affordable option, finely shredded powder nori (kizami), starts at just 108 yen โ€” wonderfully budget-friendly ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†
You’ll also find unusual flavors like wasabi nori and spicy ichimi pepper nori โ€” perfect souvenirs for adventurous foodies! (๏พŸโˆ€๏พŸ)

This one is Aotobi Momi-nori (594 yen), dusted with fragrant green ao-nori โ€” and the portion is generous!

You’ll also discover plum-flavored, yuzu citrus, Korean-style, and so many more โ€” the variety is incredible ๐Ÿ˜

Of course, classic toasted yaki-nori comes in many varieties too.
And compared to typical supermarket prices, it’s a real bargain!

Beyond bagged nori, there are also beautiful tabletop containers filled with seaweed โ€” making it hard to choose just one (^^)

The Nakazawagami Series is 627 yen, among others.

The furikake (rice seasoning) bottles have such cute packaging ๐Ÿ˜ โ€” they make adorable gifts!

And there’s nori tsukudani (savory simmered nori), nori tempura, and more…

Even dashi kombu (kelp for broth) is available โ€” it’s truly a treasure trove of ocean delicacies! ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒŠ

Top Picks at Sata Nori-ten

Since it’s seaweed, I had to snap a photo with the ocean as the backdrop! ๏ผผ(^o^)๏ผ Here’s what I picked up today!

The shop’s long-time bestseller furikake! Meet “Para-chan” โ€” only 324 yen ๐Ÿ‘ง

Whoa! The pour spout is surprisingly wide! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Give it a shake, and big flakes of nori sprinkle out โ€” “para para” (the Japanese onomatopoeia for sprinkling), which is exactly how it got its name (^^)

Crispy, generously sized flakes deliver a wonderful aroma.

It’s never soggy โ€” and you get that authentic, fragrant nori flavor in every bite ๐ŸŽถ

This one is Snack Ajitsuke-nori (seasoned nori snack) for 324 yen.

It’s incredibly crisp and crunchy ๐Ÿ˜‹

That satisfying crunch will genuinely surprise you! And the flavor? Absolutely delicious!

The shop’s nori uses absolutely no soy sauce โ€” instead, they generously coat each sheet with their original secret seasoning sauce…

And to keep that signature crispness lasting as long as possible, they use a unique proprietary production method…

Now that explains it! ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†

This one is Ajitsuke-nori (Salt Nori) for 173 yen โ€” long, slim strips perfect for snacking.

Just the right size for wrapping around an onigiri rice ball! ๐Ÿ™

It’s wonderfully crisp, and both sides are evenly seasoned. Honestly, everything I tried was delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹

Warning: after tasting this, you may never go back to ordinary store-bought nori again! Highly recommended!

Sumiyoshi Nature Park is also nearby โ€” perfect for combining with your visit! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿƒ๐ŸŒฑ
