Introducing Hormon Hikoshan
Hello there!
Watching the laundry sway lazily on the balcony,
this is Binako, your Sarukuma writer!
Today I’m introducing
“Hormon Hikoshan”,
located in Miyaji, Ichinomiya-machi, Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

Hormon Hikoshan is famous for its delicious meat, and as a serious meat lover
I walked in buzzing with excitement!
There’s a parking lot right in front of the restaurant,
so you can pull up easily by car.
The interior has traditional zashiki (tatami floor seating), so you’ll take off your shoes before sitting down.
Up front there’s a self-service station with both
cold tea and hot tea, so you can pick whichever suits the weather or how you’re feeling — a small touch I really love ♥
Recommended Menu at Hormon Hikoshan

Here’s the menu.
The lunch sets are written in the middle:
・ Yakiniku Set (Grilled Meat) – 920 yen
・ Hormon Set (Beef Offal) – 720 yen
・ Tan Set (Beef Tongue) – 720 yen
The regulars order like absolute pros, calling out things like
“Yakiniku 1.5x (more meat), ÅŒmori (extra rice)” or “Mixed, ÅŒmori”
like it’s second nature.
(Yes, you can also get a Mixed Set!)
I went with the Tan Set (beef tongue).
Photos don’t quite do it justice, but the tongue is piled high in a generous mound.
This was such a treat I was leaning forward, ready to dig in.
First, that crisp shredded cabbage.
It’s roughly chopped, so the texture is fun to bite into and there’s a real natural sweetness — super refreshing.
And then — the tan. Tan-ta-tan!
The thick-cut beef tongue has an incredible springy bite, and the sweet-savory sauce coating it is pure magic.
It’s such a perfect rice partner, you’ll instantly understand why everyone orders extra rice.
I also tried the Hormon Set (grilled beef offal).
The chew is delightfully bouncy and the juicy fat is just heavenly.
The portion is hearty too — honestly, one piece of hormon could probably power you through a whole bowl of rice.
I added an order of Kimchi (550 yen) too.
The tang and spice were on point, and the
meat → kimchi loop sent my taste buds into pure happiness mode lol
Although there were a lot of male customers, it’s also a welcoming spot for women and families.
For little ones, the staff recommend the Buta-toro Set (pork jowl),
so it’s a good idea to call ahead if you’re bringing kids.
If you’re traveling through Aso, definitely give it a try!
