Welcome to Ura-Shinko

Hi there!
I’m Ayu-mama, a writer for “SaruKuma.”

Today, I’m sharing a true hidden gem — honestly, a place I almost want to keep to myself!

Welcome to 【Ura-Shinko】, located in Okishin-machi, Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City.

The location is a little tricky to find. Just before reaching Kumamoto Port, turn left at the Okishin-machi intersection and you’ll see a small bridge ahead. Turn right there and keep going straight all the way to the end.

Across the water, you can spot Kumamoto Port, which we’ve featured before.

Out at sea, you can see traditional nori (seaweed) farming nets — a quintessentially Japanese coastal scene!

The breakwater is decorated with colorful murals painted by local elementary school students!

The whole place has a relaxed, tropical island vibe.

Benches are scattered around — perfect for sitting back and gazing out at the sea.

There’s also a wide concrete plaza, which is fantastic for flying kites with the kids ♪

And honestly, the graffiti here is so creative it could pass for street art!

Why Ura-Shinko Is Worth the Detour

Here’s the big surprise — there’s an actual sandy beach!

Sandy beaches within Kumamoto City are incredibly rare, which makes this spot extra special!
Please note: swimming is not permitted.
There are even covered benches with roofs near the sandy area — a nice break from the sun.

My son had a blast hunting for seashells — beachcombing at its finest!

Look at the beautiful collection of shells we gathered (*´∇`*)

It was a cloudy day during our visit, so the views weren’t at their best — but on a sunny day, the scenery here must be absolutely breathtaking!

Warmer days are just around the corner!
It’s the perfect season for seaside fun.
Why not discover this hidden gem for yourself?
