I’m Mikan, a writer for [Sarukuma].

Today I’m introducing a wonderful local gem located in Haramizu, Kikuyo Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto Prefecture — Horafuki-tei Kikuyo Branch.

My family and I are regulars at Horafuki-tei, but this time before heading out, I checked their official website and discovered something amazing!
The batter, noodles, AND sauce are all completely original — made in-house!

This is a place that takes okonomiyaki seriously!
No wonder every visit tastes incredible — now I understand why!

There’s a parking area right in front of the restaurant — very convenient!

Inside, you’ll find both table seating and traditional tatami (zashiki) rooms.

This time, we were guided to a tatami seating area at the very back of the restaurant!
Even though I’d been here many times, this was my first time at this particular spot.

Even though it was just me and my two children, the staff kindly gave us a private tatami room where we could relax without worrying about other guests.

When I chatted with the staff later, they told me:
“We always prioritize the tatami seats for families with children.” How wonderful!

However, the place fills up fast — it was completely booked right after opening!
Tip: Arrive right at opening time, or come a bit later when things settle down.

Recommended Menu Items

Okonomiyaki (Japanese Savory Pancakes)
Mixed: 600 yen
Negi-tama (Green Onion & Egg): 700 yen
Seafood Mix: 1,000 yen

Horayaki (Modan-yaki / Okonomiyaki with Noodles)
Horayaki: 700 yen
Negi (Green Onion) Horayaki: 900 yen
Cheese Horayaki: 900 yen

And that’s just the okonomiyaki and modan-yaki section!
The variety is honestly incredible!

Gozen Set Meals

Standard Gozen: 1,000 yen
Double Gozen: 1,000 yen
Hearty Gozen: 950 yen
Limited Time: Horayaki Set Meal: 1,200 yen
If you’re really hungry, the Gozen set meals are the way to go!

These sets include okonomiyaki or yakisoba, plus you can pick your favorite “Today’s Main” dish from the right page of the menu. Such a great deal!

I visited at lunchtime and was famished. The classics looked great, but I was drawn to the limited-time offer, so I ordered the limited-time Horayaki Set Meal (1,200 yen).

First, the rest of the set arrived before the Horayaki:
Sashimi! Plus two side dishes!
(Comes with rice and miso soup)

When I saw it all, I started to wonder, “Can I really eat all of this?” (haha)

Such a generous portion — I was thrilled!

And then it arrived!

Piping hot, freshly made Horayaki!
The aroma was unbelievable.

This is exactly why eating in-restaurant is the best — that just-off-the-grill flavor can’t be beat!

Inside, it’s packed with noodles!
And when you cut into it, the texture is incredibly fluffy!

Wondering where the mayo is? Don’t worry — it’s mixed right into the batter!

Simply delicious!

You can order takeout too, but freshly made is on another level. So glad I brought the kids in to enjoy it on-site!
