About the Shop
Hello, fellow travelers!
I’m Binako, a writer for Sarukuma, and I’ll admit — every delicious bite in Kumamoto seems to find its way straight to my waistline!
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to a charming traditional Japanese sweets shop located in Kawashiri, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City:
“Akaboshi Kyoeido Kawashiri Branch”.

Heads up: there’s no parking lot, so locals simply pull over along the street to grab their treats!

The wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) lined up in the display case look absolutely beautiful.

Habutae Mochi — 90 yen
The red and white colors are simply gorgeous — a traditional combination considered auspicious in Japan.

Fu Manju — 110 yen
A manju made with fu (wheat gluten)? Now that’s intriguing — I had to know what it was like!

And for chocolate lovers, there’s something to get excited about —
Chocolate Manju — 90 yen
is on the menu too!

And just look at that traditional steamer billowing with fragrant steam —
this is the very essence of authentic Japanese wagashi craftsmanship!
Recommended Menu Items

This time, I tried the
Amigasa, Sakura Mochi, and Amazake Manju!

I fell completely in love with the Amigasa.
It’s seriously delicious!

The lightly sweetened, smooth koshian (fine red bean paste)
literally melts in your mouth — pure bliss!

Next up was the Sakura Mochi (cherry blossom rice cake)!
That soft pink color is so cheerful — it puts you in a great mood instantly.

The slightly grainy texture of the rice and the gentle saltiness from the cherry leaf
balance perfectly with the sweetness of the anko (red bean paste).
It’s so harmonious you could eat them forever!

Next, I tried the Amazake Manju!
The round shape and chewy dough are so adorable.

The sweetness of the anko paired with the unmistakable aroma of amazake (sweet fermented rice drink) —
oh my goodness, it’s absolutely heavenly!
The rich flavor that wafts up through your nose is so good, you’ll want to keep breathing through your nose just to savor it!
The shop staff were incredibly kind and welcoming as well!
