Hello, fellow travelers!
I’m Binako, a writer for Sarukuma โ€” and yes, I’m the kind of person who can polish off five or six candies in a single sitting!

Today I’m taking you to visit
Nagamine-higashi in Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City, where you’ll find
“Ikinari Dango no Seiseiya Mishima” โ€” a charming local sweet shop specializing in Kumamoto’s iconic traditional treat.

The shop appears to have recently relocated, and it looks beautifully clean and welcoming.
The sweet potato illustration on the signboard alone is enough to make your mouth water!

At the counter, you’ll find the menu posted up for easy viewing.

Ikinari Dango (steamed sweet potato dumplings)
With sweet azuki bean paste โ€” 120 yen
With white bean paste โ€” 120 yen
With uguisu (green pea) bean paste โ€” 120 yen
Ohagi (sweet rice ball) โ€” 120 yen

These were the options available during my visit!

What is ikinari dango? It’s a beloved Kumamoto specialty โ€” a slice of fresh sweet potato topped with sweet bean paste, wrapped in a chewy mochi-like dough, then steamed to perfection.

They also offer:

Imo-an Manju (sweet potato steamed bun) โ€” 120 yen
Ikinari Manju Dango โ€” 120 yen

However, these will return to the menu at the end of the month. I’m especially curious about the Ikinari Manju Dango!

There’s outdoor seating available, so you can enjoy your treats on the spot โ€” perfect for a quick break during your Kumamoto adventure!

Recommended Menu Items

This time, I tried:

Ikinari Dango with Uguisu Bean Paste โ€” 120 yen
Ohagi โ€” 120 yen

I’m a huge fan of uguisu bean paste โ€” that pale-green sweetened pea filling is a Japanese classic!

Let’s start with the ohagi.
Just look at it โ€” perfectly round and irresistibly cute.

Beautifully plump and bite-sized.

You can still see the whole azuki beans in the paste, which always promises great flavor.

Andโ€ฆ split open!

The rice still has its texture โ€” packed densely and beautifully.

Wow โ€” this ohagi is incredible!

The rice has a touch of saltiness.
The red bean paste isn’t overly sweet, but still delivers that satisfying sweetness.

(How do they pull this off?!)

The salty rice plays perfectly against the sweet bean paste.
This is what I’d call “infinite ohagi” โ€” you simply can’t stop at one!

Now for the Ikinari Dango with Uguisu Bean Paste

It looks absolutely mouthwatering โ€” the dough alone is enticing!

You can clearly see the generous layer of sweet potato and uguisu paste.
And the size of that sweet potato slice โ€” it’s huge!

The sweet potato is incredibly delicious!
The natural flavor of the potato truly shines through.

The uguisu bean paste gently complements the sweet potato โ€” a beautiful pairing.
The mochi-like dough has a wonderful chewy texture, too!

Ikinari dango really is a Kumamoto treasure.
The shop staff were friendly and warm โ€” a lovely experience all around!

If you’re visiting Kumamoto, I highly recommend stopping by to try these authentic local sweets!
